Say NO to Hound Hunting and Baiting Black Bears in Montana

The Montana legislature is debating a bill, SB 397, which Introduces bear-baiting and hound hunting for the purposes of hunting black bears.
"Hounding" is hunting a practice in which released dogs chase a frightened wild animal to the point of exhaustion until the animal climbs a tree to escape the pursuit of hounds, and then the hunters shoot the exausted animal off the limbs of trees. Along the way, dogs also chase, harass, injure, and kill "non-target" animals such as pets, farm animals and other unintended wildlife. This type of hunting was recently banned in California because it is inhumane and unsporting.
In "bear baiting", bear-hunters leave carcasses as food to lure bears and shoot them when they come to eat. This also attracts the endangered grizzly bear and puts it at risk.Hunters claim that the fundamental principle of hunting is "fair chase," but there is nothing fair about bear baiting. In fact, there is not even a chase. An animal is lured to an area and shot while eating.
Senate Bill SB 397 doesn't stop at bears. It includes wolverines, lynx, lions and wolves to be trapped, snared, hounded, baited a full 10 months out of the year. We ask Montana Governor Steve Bullock to veto this bill which is an all out assault on carnivore species and is not in keeping with "fair chase" hunting. Ban this type of cruelty in Montana.
