****Update 8/22/2012***** I have now heard many versions of this story. The first reported by the news made it sound like Kilo was shot by the suspect. The next I heard said Kilo was trying to protect his officer/handler when the handler was shot in the legs and would not allow medics to reach the officer so they shot Kilo. Now I have heard the third version supposedly from the actual officers involved saying Kilo was wounded himself by friendly fire and actually crawled to his owner and still tried to protect him by laying on his chest. The other officers saw Kilo was struggling and dying. They didn't want him to suffer so they took it upon themselves to shoot Kilo and give him peace. I was not there. I do not know who to believe. Regardless, I still think Kilo could have been taken to a vet and the vet could have given him a more peaceful way out if his injuries were not survivable. I still stand strong in my cause for all officers to have tranquilizers in their cars for any situation regarding the need to subdue an animal. I really think this will lower kill rates of domestic animals and give officers options. Please stand with me to continue my cause even if we will never know the true story of what happend to Kilo. At least we will be able to help future k9's and domestic animals. Thanks so much everyone! Katlin
On July 27, 2012, K9 Officer Kilo from Anderson Police Dept in Anderson, IN was killed in action along with an innocent bystander. Two officers were injured. The suspect killed himself. The situation was tragic. The suspect had opened fire when wounding Kilo's owner officer. Kilo would not let the fellow officers near his owner as he felt he needed to protect him. Kilo was doing what he was trained to do which was to serve and protect. The officers had no choice but to shoot Kilo so they could tend to the wounded officer. This doesn't have to happen. Officers should be allowed the option of using a tranquilizer gun on the k9 officers so death is not these dogs only option. This is not a petition against police officers. This is a petition for police officers. These K9's are like family to these men and women and when they are wounded or killed in action these officers are devastated. Let's make a difference and a change! Let's give these police officers the training and tranquilizer guns to use in a situation that they at least have options. Let's do this for Kilo and all fellow K9 officers who have come and gone. Let's do this for our police officers who work so hard to protect us! Thanks so much everyone! I know we can make a difference!
