Too many poor, innocent animals are being given a death sentence because of careless owners. An "owner surrender" of a pet often gives the animal 24 hours or less to be rescued and adopted. If noone comes within that short time frame, the pet is immediately put to death. Animal shelters are deceiving in their names. The word 'shelter' means refuge; a haven. Unfortunately this is not true of animal shelters at all, as many of them will only keep an animal for 3 days at the most before euthanizing them. Our tax dollars are going to support these high kill animal shelters. I would rather our tax dollars went to supporting the opening of animal sanctuaries and low cost neuteuring/spaying services to prevent tragic events such as a perfectly healthy animal having to be put to sleep.
I recently visited an animal shelter in search of an animal companion. It was on a Friday afternoon. I was particularly interested in a beautiful tabby cat. He looked very scared and sad and my heart went out to him. I wanted to wait to make sure I had food, a litter box, toys, and anything else I would need first and to get the pet fees cleared with my apartment first so I waited. I told the people at the animal shelter that I was interested and would be back for the cat. That following Monday when I asked about the cat I was told that he had been euthanized Friday evening. When asked why they said it was because he had been an owner surrender. He had only been there since Thursday and yet he was killed. This is insane! Something must be done to stop the killing off innocent animals.
