Ask Elle Macpherson to Stop Taking Rhino Horn

In spite of the medical facts that call the ingestion of Rhino Horn "quackery": supermodel and entrepreneur, Elle Macpherson has admitted to ingesting the controversial Chinese medicine in an interview with The Times Online because "[it] works for me". She went on to say the illegal substance tastes like "crushed bone and fungus".
The consumption of rhino horn and other such "medicines" is the financial support of the illegal poaching industry. The demand for these medicines, which are said to cure anything from fever to menstrual cramps and high blood pressure, are responsible for the decline in Black Rhino populations since the 1970s.Four of the world's five rhino species are threatened with extinction; three of of which are considered Critically Endangered. During the World Cup - 2 female Black Rhinos were butchered by gangs of poachers, left to die in the bush with only their horns removed. Last year, 122 rhinos were poached in South Africa and this year, if the current rate continues, 180-200 more will be killed. As of 2009 there are 800 rhinos remaining in Zimbabwe and 1,570 black rhinos in all of South Africa.
The Aisian Rhinos, which are preferred for these medicines, are even more critically endangered. There are currently 250-400 Sumatran Rhinos and approximately 100 Javan Rhinos remaining in the world.
The medicinal benefits have been proven to be a fallacy. In 1990, Chinese researchers determined that the extract "could slightly lower fever in rats." The concentrations ingested in capsules are many times lower. As the horn is made largely of Keratin, one would do just as well to chew on their fingernails.
We are asking for Ms. Macpherson to become an advocate for these species not a reason for their extinction.
