NO to lap dancing clubs in York City Centre
We, the undersigned, call on City of York Council to reject the application for renewal of licence from lap dancing club 'Upstairs' (part of The Mansion), on Micklegate in York.
The current licence expires on 30 November 2013.
Lap dancing clubs serve to normalise the sexual objectification of women. As noted by the Human Rights organisation Object, the sexist culture perpetuated by the presence of SEVs (Sexual Entertainment Venues) has been recognised by the UN Convention on Eliminating All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women since 1979 as having clear links to discrimination and violence against women.
Lap dancing clubs have no place in our community. They promote sexist stereotypes, create 'no go' areas for women and local residents, and impact negatively on the character and reputation of York as a welcoming, family-friendly city.
