The Cairns community is asking the Department of Transport & Main Roads to relocate, not bulldoze, the two old figs between Stoney Creek Rd and the Western Arterial Rd. These iconic figs have for many years provided a meeting place for people, and somewhere to stop and enjoy the shade while having a lunch break, or smoko.
Approximately six mature figs were relocated as part of the Cairns Esplanade project. These were cut back substantially before moving and roots trenched to promote root growth before moving. In Hyde Park Sydney a 200 tonne, 80 year old Fig Tree from A to B in Sydney's Hyde Park was relocated, as part of The Anzac Memorial Centenary Project"
