Stop the Construction of a Men's Homeless Shelter and Soup Kitchen in Our Residential Neighborhood

  • recipient: Petition to the Washington City Council and Planning Board Regarding the Proposed Homeless Shelter at 418 Brown St

Our neighborhood in the vicinity of Mac Nair St/Brown St and 4th St is home to many and a haven for families with young children and elderly citizens living on their own. A proposed plan to establish a men's homeless shelter and soup kitchen threatens to disrupt this peace by bringing a constant influx of potentially unstable adult men into the vicinity on a year-round basis, and projected ~100 transient people daily.

We understand and deeply empathize with the plight of the homeless in Beaufort County. However, the specific location for this project poses a potential risk to the well-being and security of our Washington neighborhood's vulnerable residents.

We're asking local authorities to consider alternative locations safer and more suitable for both shelter inhabitants and the surrounding community.

Please, sign the petition to show your support for preservation, safety, and tranquility of our neighborhood. Let's make our voices heard and ensure our concerns are taken into consideration.

There will be a special use permit hearing on December 12th, 6pm at the Planning Board Municipal Building (102 E 2nd St, 2nd floor). Your input and attendance is strongly encouraged. Consider speaking at the meeting and/or providing a statement to be read for how this would adversely affect our neighborhood.

Call or write to the Washington City Council members today to express your concerns about this men's homeless shelter location.
