Save Toronto's Kensington Market from Walmart
Commercial developer giant RioCan wants to build a Walmart in Kensington Market. A three story shopping mall, including a suburban sized Walmart, is in the works for the western border of Toronto's Kensington Market. This will kill local businesses and change this vibrant neighbourhood!
A full 60% of Torontonians from all over the city are against the proposed Walmart. City Councilor Adam Vaughan noted at a public meeting that Walmart is known to use predatory pricing and other practices that put small independent stores out of business.
Despite initially being rejected by governing bodies, RioCan is still fighting to develop the area.
Small businesses are the heart of the vibrant, family-friendly neighbourhood and RioCan's plans will destroy them.
Tell RioCan that you support Torontonians and are against big business in our communities.
Dear Jordan Robins,
As RioCan's Senior Vice President of planning and development we the undersigned urge you to reconsider the planned development of a mall and Walmart in the Kensington Market community.
There have been a number of roadblocks already faced by RioCan, and this must stand as a sign that a Walmart does not belong in our downtown neighbourhoods. Local, independently owned business serve the residents and your development will put so many livelihoods at risk.
Listen to Torontonians. We do not want a Wal-Mart in our community. Respect the neighbourhood and work with the locals to develop space that serves families and business owners in a positive way. Taking away jobs, possible green space, and shuttering small family run businesses does nothing for a community.
Please reconsider this massive development. The people of Toronto have spoken out loud and clear. Just listen to them.
