We, the undersigned, request your The President of the Republic of Malawi, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament and the Malawi Law Commission to introduce Dual Citizenship in Malawi.
Under the Malawi Citizenship Act 1964, which came into force on 6 July 1966, Malawi and many of her origins are losing out because Malawi prohibits Dual Citizenship. On acquiring foreign citizenship, Malawians are required to renounce their Malawian Citizenship only to become foreigners in their country of origin, Malawi. We strongly believe that as the rights, privileges or immunities enjoyed under the citizenship of Malawi terminate, this significantly restricts the ability to effectively contribute to the economic and community development of our beloved country Malawi.
Dual Citizenship is one step towards bringing Malawians together in promoting global participation and the "Brain Gain" concept to produce a globally educated and skilled workforce as well as a viable entrepreneurial culture. Ahead of the 1215 Millennium Development Goals, we write in acknowledgement and support of the Government's initiative to repeal the current Citizenship Act, with a view to decriminalising Dual Citizenship and allow Malawians their constitutional and fundamental right to freedom of movement in seeking employment, education, family life, health care and be free from poverty and discrimination on participating in the global market.
