As of January 1, 2018 recycling companies in the people's republic of China are no longer accepting film plastic for recycling. The City of Halifax has landfilled film plastic, the price for export of film plastic has dropped, and buyers are in short supply worldwide. 1 The world is failing to recycle its bags .
Other cities and regions have gone plastic-bag free such as Montreal, Paris, India, Rwanda, Ireland, Italy, and the states of Hawaii and California, Victoria BC, Leaf Rapids and Thompson, Man. Wood Buffalo Alta. Huntingdon, Deux-Montagnes, and Brossard, Que. 2 Halifax has recommended 3 a feasibility study about doing the same. We are a maritime province relying on the Atlantic ocean for our economy.
We the undersigned claim this same right to enjoy a city that does not threaten global systems and our livelihoods with single-use disposable plastic waste. We ask the city of Halifax go bag free and also ban single-use plastics: straws, cellophane, styrofoam, plastic cutlery, and others that have wholly cellulose, recyclable or biodegradable alternatives that we can recycle or compost ourselves.
