The mother of baby deer ‘Nani’ was shot and killed by Serbian hunters. Nani was adopted and immediately taken into care by adoptive mother Mrs. Mitic; Nani had a good home and was cared for by Mrs. Mitic. The local police and hunters worked together to ensure that Nani was thereafter removed from the care of Mrs. Mitic and placed in a terrible facility owned by hunters.
The Serbian Minister for Agriculture, Mrs Bogosavljevic Boskovic, who originally had 30 days for acting in agreement to, and implementing ‘Article 58’ of the current Serbian Law for releasing Nani back to Mrs. Mitic, has now after no less than 80 days, still not implemented Serbian Animal Welfare legislation.
We immediately request that Minister Mrs Bogosavljevic Boskovic actually implements her own national legislation (Animal Welfare law Article 58) and immediately returns Nani and all other animals held by the hunters back to Mrs. Mitic.
Serbia is wishing to become an EU member state. Any nation wishing to join the EU in the future must show the EU Enlargement Commission that it, as an individual state, is implementing its own national (in this case - Serbian) ‘rules of law’ legislation. This is not the case for Nani, who now after some 80 days in captivity is being deprived of both food and water by the hunters who currently have Nani in their makeshift compound. The Minister Mrs Bogosavljevic Boskovic is doing nothing to implement the existing Serbian law or to free Nani and the other animals – and this must change immediately.
If it wishes to gain any credibility throughout the world, we call on the Serbian government to implement existing Serbian animal welfare law and to immediately free baby deer Nani from the hunters; returning nani and the other held animals to Mrs. Mitic. Nani is growing more weaker and sick as every day of no action passes.
We are now 80 days into no action from Minister Mrs Bogosavljevic Boskovic and her Serbian government.
The Serbian government; in particular the Minister for Agriculture; must free Nani immediately with all other animals held by the hunters, and return them to Mrs. Mitic.
