Puppy Mills Have Blood on Their Hands. Utah Is Considering Letting More of Them Come To the State.

Puppy mills make money off of the deaths of dogs. It's that simple. The entire industry is built on pumping more and more animals out into an already flooded market, many of which end up either in shelters, sick from inbreeding or improper veterinary care, or euthanized. Meanwhile, mama dogs are trapped for life on these cruelty farms, impregnated over and over again until their bodies are entirely used up. It is no secret that the conditions these dogs come from are brutal and cause mass suffering, which is why so many animal rights activists have worked to shut down as many mills as possible. So why is Utah considering legislation that would make it easier for puppy mills to operate in the state?

A new bill proposed in Utah would limit cities' ability to adopt ordinances which prohibit the operation of certain animal businesses. Since Utah has no state-wide laws against puppy mills, this would mean the exploitative and abusive industry could operate freely once local laws are rendered powerless. The best chance many states currently have to fight these industries is to begin resistance on a local level until more state-wide legislation can get passed. But the proposed law would not allow cities to regulate their animal businesses, paving the way for abuse, suffering, and exploitation.

A number of states have led the charge against the horrific conditions of puppy mills by banning them outright or banning all pet stores from selling pets that are sourced there. Recently, both California and Maryland joined the list of states that prohibits pet stores from selling puppies, kittens, and rabbits from commercial breeders. But these states remain few and far between -- and it is crucial that Utah join others in saying no to puppy mills. Until puppy mills are outlawed at the state level, Utah must give local governments the power to protect these animals!

We must put pressure on the Utah House of Representatives to not adopt this regressive, anti-pet policy which puts profit above animal welfare. If the state cares at all about animals and their welfare, it must say no to this dangerous law. Sign the petition now if you agree!
