Montana: Stop Trapping Endangered Wolverines!

  • by: Chris Wolverton
  • recipient: Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission

Montana's trapping season starts on December 1st this year. Though the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended that wolverines be classified as an endangered species in December 2010, Montana is the only state in the continental U.S. that still allows them to be trapped.

Wolverines were once prolific in the West, but their population in the continental U.S. is now down to 250 to 300. 100 to 175 of these live in Montana. The population is expected to decline further in the coming years due to warming temperatures and shrinking habitat.

Allowing hunters to trap wolverines pushes an already vulnerable species further toward extinction. Please sign the petition to convince the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission to close the wolverine trapping season before December 1st.

We, the undersigned, are concerned with your plans to open the wolverine trapping season on December 1st of this year. Though the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended wolverines be classified as an endangered species in December 2010, Montana is the only state in the continental U.S. that still allows them to be trapped.

Allowing hunters to trap wolverines pushes an already vulnerable species further toward extinction. We respectfully urge you to close the wolverine trapping season before December 1st. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
