The River Ganges, also known as the Ganga, is the largest river in India. It is of extraordinary religious importance for Hindus, and relied upon for survival by millions. It is currently dangerously polluted, posing a risk to marine life, wildlife and humans. Please sign this petition asking Mr. Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Environment, to regulate industrial pollution within 15km of the river.
The river is now so polluted that the levels of toxins, chemicals and other dangerous bacteria found in it are almost 3000 times over the limit suggested as safe by the World Health Organization. The Ganges provides water to about 40% of India's population across 11 states, serving an estimated population of 500 million people who rely on it for food, water, bathing and agriculture. It is also used by tens of millions of pilgrims who venture to India's most holy of rivers each year to bathe and worship.
We ask Mr. Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of Environment to regulate industry within a 15km ratio of the River Ganges. This regulation suggests a 50% decrease in pollution made by the year 2025. The reason behind the 15 km ratio is that the pollution caused by these companies directly enters the river.
