Pledge Your Support for Israel's LGBT Community
Israel's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community were left reeling on Saturday 1st of August 2009, when a lone gunman entered a basement apartment that was being used for a Gay and Lesbian Alliance youth meeting and, brandishing an automatic weapon, fired indiscriminately into the crowd, killing two people, 16-year-old student Liz Tarboushi and also 26-year-old youth worker Nir Katz, and injuring at least 10 others.
Tel Aviv's LGBT community quickly held a series of impromptu marches to show that they would not be sent into retrograde and pushed into hiding by the attack. Now, one protestor has called this event "Israel's Stonewall" - a chance at coming together as a united force committed to changing national attitudes about Israel's homosexual and transgender community.
We the undersigned, believing that none of us stand alone in the fight for equality, and that one right gained, or one mind changed for the better, is a victory for all, sign this Care2 pledge to show that Israeli LGBTs are far from alone at this time, and that the global lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, along with our vital straight allies, mourn the loss of Liz and Nir along with Israel, but we also seek to support the LGBT Israeli community in the hope of a better tomorrow, a tomorrow marked by acceptance and celebration for Israel's gay sons and daughters.
Together we stand as one, united for the cause of Global Equality, and to Israeli LGBTs we extend the presence of our thoughts, the warmth of our hearts and the power of our voices as they renew their efforts in the pursuit of a safe country based on the cultivation and respect of its citizens, free of anti-gay violence.
