Do you find the NFL team name "Redskins" to be racist and offensive?
The Washington Redskins name is viewed by many as a racial slur against Native Americans. The mounting pressure makes it clear, from mainstream media and Native Americans to colleagues and Congressmen, people want Dan Snyder and the NFL to change the name of this team. Even the Green Bay Packers CEO came out against the name, calling it derogatory.
But Dan Snyder says he will Never change his team's name, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to back him calling it a matter of "pride and respect." Their primary argument is that a vast majority of people don't care about the name, and that it is tradition. That’s an unfortunate polarizing attitude.
This is your chance to say no, we do care. Sign the petition, and ask Dan Snyder and Roger Goodell to change the name of the Washington football club to something that's not deragotory to an entire race of people.
In addition to being the great grand nephew of Anti Defamation League Founder Sigmund Livingston, I am also a Washingtonian of 20+ years, a Nationals partial season ticket holder, and a regular at many local sporting events. I have also decided to boycott the Washington football club and not give them any of my money.
Mr. Snyder and Mr. Goodell:
You have said that you will never change the name of the Washington Redskins, and have dismissed complaints about this matter as the voice of the vast minority.
We are not the minority; we are your customers, both in the Washington area and indirectly through the NFL's many broadcasts. And we are formally asking you to change the odious racial slur team name of the Washington football club to something more palatable.
