In the United States alone, more than 20 million lobsters are consumed by humans each year. These lobsters are stored in tiny tanks until they are sold to the eager hands of consumers, who boil them alive in pots on the stove.
This cruelty is often overlooked by those who say that the lobsters can't feel any pain, but there is ample evidence of otherwise:
"The lobster does not have an autonomic nervous system that puts it into a state of shock when it is harmed. It probably feels itself being cut. ... I think the lobster is in a great deal of pain from being cut open ... [and] feels all the pain until its nervous system is destroyed" -- Invertebrate zoologist Jaren G. Horsley

As PETA puts it, "While the experts couldn't seem to agree on which method would cause the least suffering, they do agree that there really is no humane way to kill these sensitive and unusual animals."

We, the undersigned, are writing to ask you to start introducing legislation that will combat animal cruelty, and, in particular, cruelty to lobsters.
Lobsters are unique creatures with a complex nervous system that allows them to feel pain. That is, they can feel pain until their nervous system is completly destroyed-- which is exactly what happens to millions of them each year on stovetops in kitchens. Not only this, lobsters are also crammed into tiny tanks, stacked on top of each other like mere vegetables or potatoes.
Please introduce legislation that will completely outlaw the consumption of lobsters in Ottawa, Ontario, or even Canada as a whole. The fate of millions of sensitive beings is in your hands.
