Indonesia: Designate More Habitat for Imperiled Sumatran Rhinos

Despite some gains in Borneo, the Sumatran rhino remains one of the most imperiled animals on the planet. Will you help save them?

Fewer than 100 Sumatran rhinos now remain in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Habitat loss and poaching continue to push these incredible creatures to the brink of extinction, but recent investigations may provide some reason for hope — and a vital lifeline for Sumatran rhinos.

Researchers have identified preferred habitat features for these beleaguered animals, but action is needed to secure new homes for rhinos and boost their numbers. Accoridng to scientists, Sumatran rhinos do best in "elevated areas away from roads, in close distance to mud-volcanoes, with a low presence of human trespassers and a wallow on site, and within a neighborhood of dense forest and grassland patches."

That's where YOU come in. To save these rhinos, Indonesia must make more room for them. We're calling on the country's government to identify and set aside vital habitat for Sumatran rhinos in an effort to save them. To convince the country's president to prioritize this potentially species-saving effort, we we will need as many signatures as possible from Indonesia and around the world.

Please help us encourage Indonesia's government to secure the habitat Sumatran rhinos need to survive — sign and share this petition right away!

President Widodo:

I strongly urge you to to identify and secure more and better habitat for the imperiled Sumatran rhinos of Indonesia. Fewer than 100 are believed to remain in the world and your country has a unique opportunity to save this species.

According to the latest science, these animals require elevated areas away from roads, in close distance to mud-volcanoes, with a low presence of human trespassers and a wallow on site, and within a neighborhood of dense forest and grassland patches for healthy survival.

Indonesia has an historic chance to save an entire species from extinction. I strongly encourage you to work with the international conservation community to identify and set aside quality habitat for these rhinos within your country.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,
