Tell the Borough of Verdun to Stop Trapping Beavers!
The Borough of Verdun is repeating its ineffective beaver trapping program that captured only three beavers over the past two years while catching many dogs in the traps they set.
The borough claims that excessive beavers in the area endanger residents by gnawing on trees and causing them to fall. In 2013, the borough set three times the usual number of traps and only caught one beaver. Last year, the traps caught and killed two beavers. According to Anita Kapuscinska of the Montreal SPCA, "They also trapped a whole bunch of dogs and other animals so it's not an efficient system."
Even if trapping beavers were effective, it's a cruel and painful method of capturing them. The fact that dogs and other wildlife have suffered in the traps is inexcusable considering how few of the target animals were caught. The borough needs to come up with a humane solution to their beaver problem, such as Kapuscinska's suggestion, "Install wire fencing around the trees, around the large trees you don't want to be destroyed."
Please sign the petition to urge the Borough of Verdun to end their ineffective, cruel beaver trapping program and seek a humane solution!
We, the undersigned, are concerned that you are repeating your ineffective beaver trapping program that captured only three beavers over the past two years while catching many dogs in the traps set.
We understand your claims that excessive beavers in the area endanger residents by gnawing on trees and causing them to fall. In 2013, you set three times the usual number of traps and only caught one beaver.
We believe that you need to come up with a humane solution to your beaver problem, such as Kapuscinska's suggestion, "Install wire fencing around the trees, around the large trees you don't want to be destroyed."
We respectfully urge you to end your beaver trapping program and seek a humane solution. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
