I’ve got a critical update on the failing nuclear reactors at San Onofre. A new report informed by a document leaked to Friends of the Earth reveals that the reactors’ broken steam generators, the cause of a radiation leak in January, have levels of damage that are off the charts.
The reactors have been shut down since the leak, thanks in a large part to the pressure that Friends of the Earth and allies across Southern California have put on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Friends of the Earth released a series of groundbreaking technical reports covered by the most widely read newspapers in Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. We also helped pack a hearing room with hundreds of concerned residents when the NRC came to town last month, and we filed a legal petition demanding that the NRC keep the flawed reactors shut down pending a review of their operating license.
