What you're signing:
Dear Congressman Cooper,
I would first like to thank you for your hard work and for representing the issues that face Tennesseans of the 5th District.
I am writing with a request to please ban live animal circuses from performing in Nashville.
I feel strongly compelled to reach out to you for several reasons.
I am sure you're probably aware of the recent guilty plea to 22 counts of animal cruelty and abuse in the well known case of Tennessee Walking Horse trainer, Jackie McConnell.
It has been embarrassing that our state's namesake is associated with the findings in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. It is a poor reflection on how our state is perceived to treat horses and animals. Obviously despite the stigma, an enormous amount of good came from the widely publicized case.
Hosting circuses such as Ringling brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus is taking several leaps backwards. Above I have included several links to video footage and documented findings that support the accusations of abuse.
Our state is also home to the nation's largest Elephant Sanctuary in Hoenwald, TN. The mission of the 2700 acre sanctuary is to provide a safe, healthy refuge & retirement for circus and zoo elephants. This sanctuary is something that Tennesseans can be extremely proud to have in our state. It is an extraordinary organization.
It would be hypocritical to welcome the circuses known for mistreating these creatures. It is undoing all of the hard work the sanctuary strives to accomplish. It sends a disappointing and confusing message to proud Tennesseans.
Lastly, if live animal circuses were banned from Nashville, it would only open up more opportunities for families with children to take advantage of several other local Nashville activities. I am sure with so many wonderful offerings, you are not likely to receive a letter from a family requesting that a circus come to town. People will take advantage of all that we do offer. There are also several other circus shows that do not feature live animals and therefore do not mistreat animals such as Cirque du Soleil, the New Pickle Family Circus, Cirque Éloize, and others.
Thank you for your time Congressman Cooper. I look forward to hearing your thougthis regarding this request.
Best Regards,
Gina Thimme
