Five thousand badgers are being killed over the next six weeks in a 'trial.' This is to escalate to a further 130,000 badgers throughout the UK if we don't protest to the Coalition governement here in the UK and stop the badger cull. It has not been established scientifically that badgers are the cause of bovine TB and in fact the issue is very much in dispute. The majority of the courtry is against the cull but the government is overriding the wishes of the public. It is far more likely that bovine TB is spread through intensive farming practices and many farmers are against the cull but they are being ignored. Many scientists also oppose the cull on the grounds because the cross-contamination link has not been proved. Even should a link be established at some future time culled badgers will be replaced by badgers from other areas who might be infected so the disease will continue to spread. The way the cull is being carried on is hit or miss: the number of infected badgers among the dead is not being recorded systematically and statistically so we are learning little if anything from this exercise which seem largely to be at the whim of David Cameron who says he "... will not be bullied" and will continue the cull for the good of the country. Yet the previous anti-cull petition was supported by 80% of the country that was polled. Vaccines are used elsewhere to control the spread of bovine TB successfully by innoculating livestock and many British farmers say they would prefer to innoculate their livestock rather than cull badgers. Innoculation would protect their animals from suffering and dying whatever the source of the contamination. The EU has certain restrictions which conflict with this alternative however and there may be a plethora of vaccines to confuse the issue. In the meantime a species native to the UK is being decimated on the basis of a whim, not scientific proof. Please sign this petition to protest the Badger Cull. Thank you.
