In July, investigators found an orphaned 2-year-old elephant chained in a hidden area at the notorious Johor Zoo in Malaysia. The elephant was unable to move more than a step or two in any direction and was made to stand for periods of up to 48 hours in the hot sun.
Zoo officials said the elephant named Paloh was being "trained" to obey the zookeepers.
The organization Nature Alert brought the abuse to the attention of the public and through their voices Paloh was released from her chains and allowed to walk alongside her buddy Jeli, a 3-year-old orphaned elephant.
Both baby elephants are living in dirty, abusive conditions. The Johor Zoo has been cited as the worst zoo in the world.
In the wild these elephants would still be nursing from their mothers until the age of 5. We ask they be released to a sanctuary where they may receive the nutrition, care and understanding that nature intended them to have.
We the undersigned ask that you release baby elephants Paloh and Jeli from the Johor Zoo and move them to a humane sanctuary that can better care for their needs.
