We are experiencing an unprecedented number of attacks on the Endangered Species Act since it was signed into law in 1973 by near unanimous, bipartisan majorities. From legislation introduced in the House to directives from the Trump Administration, this latest series of assaults unnecessarily pits industrial and economic interests against America's wildlife legacy.
But more than 4 out of 5 Americans (including 3 out of 4 self-identified conservatives) support the Endangered Species Act. If we band together, we can protect the creatures that rely on it.

I am writing today extremely alarmed by the hasty administrative and congressional proposals that could undermine the Endangered Species Act. More than 4 out of 5 Americans support this landmark legislation.
While there is room for improving the Endangered Species Act -- for both America's wildlife and our communities -- we don't need to gut the parts of the act that species and ecosystems depend upon to thrive.
We need to fix the chronic underinvestment in proactive, on-the-ground collaborative conservation. We need to put to work solutions that work faster and take more actions before species reach the crisis stage. We also need to provide incentives for landowners so that conservation doesn't have to undermine their bottom lines.
But this will take time. Instead of rushing to pursue changes that serve a few special interests in the short term, I hope you will foster thoughtful and bipartisan discussions that are based in sound science and protect the integrity of the Endangered Species Act.
