Tell Congress: Stop the Assault on Our Environment!

The Trump administration has rolled out an extraordinary crisis for the decades-long Chesapeake Bay restoration effort. It recently proposed cutting federal funding from several critical environmental agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of the Interior, and the United States Department of Agriculture. The critical work to save the Chesapeake Bay—from planting oysters to implementing best management practices on watershed farms—does not happen without these agencies.
Cuts to federal programs risk destroying more than 50 years of collaborative federal/state efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay. Predating many of our nation's bedrock environmental policies, science-based efforts to restore the Bay are heralded as an international model of restoration and conservation success. If what's happening here is any indication, the rest of our nation's waters are in jeopardy.
Hollowing out agencies and defunding grant programs wreaks havoc far beyond the federal government. States will face major budget shortfalls, critical scientific research will stop, farmers will be stuck with out-of-pocket expenses the federal government promised to pay, and many local nonprofits will cease to exist. These are the groups doing the valuable work of restoration—planting trees at churches and neighborhood playgrounds, testing water quality to let residents know if it's safe to swim, and performing countless other invaluable services for their communities.
As Congress moves forward on crafting the budget, we must remind them that environmental funding is key to so many parts of our daily lives and needs protection. We must not fall back to the days when public health was at risk from constant, heavy smog, when toxic rivers caught fire, when few had safe drinking water, and pollution was a leading cause of premature death.
Rise up with us now. Contact your members of Congress today and urge them to do the right thing: Protect environmental funding! Protect agency staffing! You can send a letter to your elected officials or call them via our alert.
We know that there are many things under attack right now—not just the Bay. But continued broad bi-partisan support for clean water is crucial, so call or write to your representatives today. When you do, don't feel like you need to fill their voicemails with disgust. Fill it with hope and your story about why you care about the Bay, which will inspire them to as well. Remember: Hope is more powerful than hate.
Subject: Protect environmental funding!
Dear [Legislator],
For more than four decades, the federal government has been a critical partner in the efforts to save the Chesapeake Bay. But the recent sweeping cuts to agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of the Interior, and the United States Department of Agriculture put that partnership and all the progress that has been made at risk.
I urge you to fight to protect the federal workers and funding for these key agencies.
Slashing funding and cutting the workforce for these agencies will keep organizations and local governments from doing the boots-on-the-ground work to implement solutions to environmental threats. It will keep farmers from implementing best management practices to keep runoff out of our waterways. And it will pave the way for corporate polluters to freely destroy the air we breath and the water we drink.
Protecting the environment is not, and should not, be a partisan issue. A saved Chesapeake Bay means better public health, cleaner waterways, and a bustling economic engine for the region. That's something we should all want and fight for. I urge you to do the right thing and protect environmental funding and staffing.
Sincerely,
