Big Oil: Pay the Real Clean up Costs for Oil Development

Alberta is home to many expansive oil development projects such as the tarsands. These projects right now have created immense environmental devastation and yet, the province of Alberta is only holding these oil companies responsible for a fraction of the predicted clean-up and restoration costs.

It is estimated that the tarsands clean up would cost the province $21 billion and yet they have only received $1.6 billion from big oil companies as reclamation bonds towards to clean up costs. If any of these companies were to go bankrupt they would not be responsible for any other money towards land clean up and restoration.

Sign now to make Big Oil responsible for the real clean up costs of oil development. By signing today you are sending a strong message that corporate profit should not come before the health of the land.

To Premier Notley,

As a person greatly concerned with the environment I am concerned that your government currently has only $1.6 billion in reclamation bonds for oil sands development. This is well below the estimated $21 billion it will take to clean up the oil sands.

In your province, it has already been shown that oil companies are not willing to clean up after themselves, as evidenced by the hundreds of abandoned oil wells across the province.

Your province must make oil companies that develop in your province responsible for the real clean up costs of oil development so that your citizens are not living in polluted areas with no hope of clean up. Oil companies register multi-billion dollar profits and you must enforce proper environmental responsible for current and future development projects.
