Urge the USDA to Stop Allowing 'Humane Meat' Labels

Now through December 5, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting public comments on proposed guidelines for labeling meat "humane," including what supporting documentation should be required. On so-called "humane" farms, animals are often subjected to cruel industry standards, including severe crowding, various mutilations without painkillers, and a terrifying journey to a violent death. Misleading labels aim to reassure consumers who want to do the right thing, but the underlying system fails to ensure a universal welfare standard for animals used for meat. And even if a standard were proposed, it would be meaningless, as conduct on farms isn't verified or enforced by the USDA.

The only kind of meat that can ever be truly humane is the vegan variety. As long as profit is involved, animal welfare will always take a back seat.

Please sign our petition urging the USDA to stop allowing highly misleading "humane" labels on meat products.

Dear [decision maker],

Stop allowing highly misleading "humane" labels on meat products

On so-called "humane" farms, animals are often subjected to cruel industry standards, including severe crowding, various mutilations without painkillers, and a terrifying journey to a violent death. Misleading labels aim to reassure consumers who want to do the right thing, but the underlying system fails to ensure a universal welfare standard for animals used for meat and allows for conditions that no concerned consumer would consider humane. And even if a standard were proposed, it would be meaningless, as conduct on farms isn't verified or enforced by the USDA.

The only kind of meat that can ever be truly humane is the vegan variety. As long as profit is involved, animal welfare will always take a back seat. I urge the USDA to do the right thing by no longer allowing highly misleading "humane" labels on meat products.
