While animal advocates have been campaigning for decades to end the cruel fur industry, there's now hope that California will become the first state in the nation to go fur free.
Legislation that was introduced by Assemblymember Laura Friedman, would make it illegal to "manufacture, sell, offer for sale, display for sale, trade, give or otherwise distribute a fur product in the state" with limited exemptions, and leave anyone found violating the law facing civil penalties.
Tragically, millions of animals continue to be senselessly killed for nothing more than their fur every year. The majority of them spend their short, miserable lives on fur farms, but even wild animals who are targeted for their coats also suffer immensely at the hands of trappers who have an arsenal of archaic tools at their disposal that are used to maim and kill.
While the demand for fur is still bizarrely high, progress is being made towards shutting this industry down. A number of countries have banned fur farms over ethical concerns, while major cities in California have acted to close their doors to this product of cruelty, including San Francisco, Berkeley, West Hollywood and Los Angeles.
Passing a statewide ban would set an amazing precedent for other states to follow and send a strong message that there's nothing fashionable about animal cruelty.
This bill has already passed two major hurdles, but it's facing some serious opposition.
