My father, Smokin' Joe Frazier, is an American hero who lived in Philadelphia for most of his life. It is time for the City of Brotherly Love to honor a man who meant so much to our country and brought pride to our community.
Smokin' Joe was born in Beaufort, SC on January 12, 1944 to Rubin and Dolly Frazier, and was the youngest of 13 children. In 1964 when he was only 20-years-old, he won a gold medal for the US boxing team despite a broken bone.
My father won 73% of his fights with a knock out. He won the NABF, NYSAC, WBA, and WBC heavyweight world titles, as well as three consecutive National Golden Gloves titles. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, US Boxing Hall of Fame, and US Olympic Hall of Fame. He was one of the greatest boxers of our time, and he deserves to be honored in his adopted hometown.
