Oklahoma has an Animal Protection Act in effect in an effort to keep animals safe; yet there are variations in the laws, charges and penalties for offenses against defenseless beings. Unless changes are made, there will be little impact on society to ensure the safety of animals. Animals have no defense and often will continue to love those who literally harm them, often resulting in fatalities. In some instances involving an animal, accidents and actions for self-defense do occur and seriously need to be proven when it comes to repercussions for harming an animal. These defenseless creatures need and deserve humans to step in and ensure that abusers be held accountable for any and all forms of intentional animal cruelty.
I propose to the Oklahoma State Legislators to implement and strictly enforce tougher animal cruelty laws, charges and penalties for any and all offenses and crimes against animals, from the first offense. Penalties should include but not be limited to longer jail sentences, higher fees, possible acts of community service hours and also being placed on an animal cruelty registry to be shared nationwide with anyone within the animal industry like sales, care, breeding and treatment. Additionally, such abusers need to be banned for lifetime working with, caring for or owning animals for the rest of their life. There shouldn’t be any second chances because it should be common knowledge that abusing an animal, just like abusing a human is wrong and unjust.
