The bison is one of the most essentially American animals on the planet — and we think its special place in our country's story should be recognized!
Bison remain one of the most enduring icons of the American West and still occupy a special place in many Native American cultures. They once numbered in the millions and wild bison herds roamed from coast to coast and from north to south. But we almost lost these majestic monitors of the plains to a bloody wave of needless killing as American settlers moved westward.
The story of the American bison is both a cautionary tale about our impact on nature and a powerful testament to America's ability to protect our irreplaceable wildlife and wild places. These mighty creatures survive today because of the passion and determination of President Teddy Roosevelt and countless conservation-minded Americans.
The bison's special place in the American story deserves to be celebrated. That's why we're asking Congress to pass The National Bison Legacy Act, legislation that would make the bison America's official national mammal.
Please help us recognize the special role that bison play in the story of America. Sign this petition now to urge your US Representative to support the National Bison Legacy Act!
I strongly urge you to do whatever you can to pass the National Bison Legacy Act (H.R. 2908), legislation that would make the bison the official mammal of the United States of America.

Tragically, these mighty creatures were nearly hunted to extinction in a bloody wave of needless killing. They survive today because of the passion and determination of President Teddy Roosevelt and countless other conservation-minded Americans.
The story of the American bison is both a cautionary tale about our impact on nature and a powerful testament to America's ability to protect our irreplaceable wildlife and wild places when we set our minds to it. It's a success story and it deserves to be celebrated.
I hope you will do all you can to pass H.R. 2908 and recognize the bison's special contribution to the story of America.
Sincerely,
