End Trans and Gender NonConforming Discrimination in Schools
Transgender students are subject to more violence and harassment than their peers. In fact, 78% of trans and gender nonconforming students experience harassment at school.
This explains why many trans students are pushed out of school and why nearly half of trans youth have considered suicide.
And it's not just their peers: adults, including those in positions of power in governments and schools across the country, are pushing policies and practices that only harm trans and gender nonconforming children further, including refusing to allow them the freedom to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. In fact, the Trump administration recently rescinded a federal directive that required schools to allow trans and gender nonconforming students to use the facilities they need.
Let's be clear: Transgender people are not second-class citizens. When the government furthers the narrative that trans children are lesser or somehow dangerous to the rest of the student body, it creates a culture of inequality that affects us all. These students deserve our love, support, and understanding, not state-mandated discrimination that encourages division and alienation.
Marginalized students must be protected, regardless of their ability, race, class, immigration status, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, and/or identity. Young people overwhelmingly get it. It's adults like those in the Trump administration who don't realize that pitting young people against one another has consequences. It encourages some to be bullies and it turns others into sinister objects.
Please sign this petition to tell Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos that it is her duty to protect all students. Signing this petition triggers a postcard to DeVos, asking her to uphold Title IX protections and give trans students the safe spaces they deserve.
