Dear friends,
We have been driven to act by the information that the Dumovac city shelter (mainly dog shelter) should be expanded with a cat shelter. We would like to participate effectively in the project through discussions, suggestions and ideas.
Our recommendation would be to put into practice an infirmary for injured and sick cats as well as for cats that are undergoing the Neuter /Spay and Return to habitat program.
Cats are territorial animals and any relocation is very stressful for them. Even the idea of a cat shelter which is in good faith proposed will be stressful for them. Knowing that so much stress can act destructively on the cats’ health, along with the fact that not every street cat can be socialized and is half wild, a much better solution for the street cats would be continuous care, concern and control of their future in the form of feeding spots.
We suggest that part of the funds intended for the construction of a cat shelter should be redirected to maintain the City feeding spots by setting up wooden boxes as is the case in Vienna.
In the Zagreb City area, there are about 40 feeding spots for street cats which we maintain privately in our spare time. We are financed by private donations of the citizens for the survival of street cats and purchase the food, cover the costs of veterinary treatment of injured and sick cats, pay for the costs of Neuter /Spay programs and return the cats to their habitat. We have exhausted our possibilities financially and lack space where we could bring the injured and sick street cats for recovery.
We therefore ask you kindly to sign our petition for an infirmary for injured and sick street cats that are undergoing medical treatment as they require a peaceful and safe place to complete recover under veterinary care under the Neuter /Spay and Return to habitat program.
These goals can be achieved with your help as part of a local self governmentimplementation under the law on the protection of animals.
