Although there are other humane options in the training process, such as humane and educationally superior human-patient simulators; however, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) continues to use these abusive methods in using live animals as part of their training curriculum. The current surgical training course is called Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST), which is offered across Australia and New Zealand.
The effort in this petition is to encourage the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) to cease the use of live animals for the surgical training program and immediately opt for superior human-patient simulators or any high-tech human simulators as used in most other facilities and countries. As documented in the attached information, realistic simulators, unlike animals, accurately replicate human anatomy and physiology and are reusable and shareable. They are also more cost-effective than using animals. Military and civilian studies have found that these methods better equip trainees with the surgical skills and psychological preparedness necessary to treat traumatic injuries.
