The Road to El Dorado is a classic DreamWorks 2D animated film, and has been loved widely by many ever since its release. Its colour, art, characters (not to mention their beautifully expressive features) and humour can be appreciated timelessly. Not many may know, but an entire franchise was planned for the film, sequels and all. Plot points for these were hidden in the first movie, however it was discontinued due to being a Box Office bomb (meaning it failed to bring in enough money). Therefore, the problem was not that anyone on the team didn't like the project, because from what I can tell, they certainly did. But rather that it was believed it wouldn't be able to rake in enough money.
Prove DreamWorks wrong here and now, SIGN THE PETITION. To this day there are possibly millions upon millions of loving fans, whether these be grown up children who remember maybe not seeing it in theatres but wearing down the tape on it's VHS, or new fans and children who've learnt about it. Lovers have built up over the years, and they'd be thrilled to see the 'sleeper' continued.
The movie encompasses the story of two unlikely heroes, Tulio and Miguel. Half-wit scoundrels and con-artists of the street in 16th century Spain. Surley an amazing and unique premise, anything but cliché. The two play off each other flawlessly, hamming it up to escape consequences of their conning. The banter between the two was so fluid, thanks to Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh being in the same booth during recording. A very rare thing to happen in animation. Although assumedly proving difficult for the audio team, it was certainly a genius move, as it really enhanced their interaction and made the dynamic duo ever the more brotherly.
The 2D animation in this movie was absolutely delightful, and the colours and backgrounds (especially in El Dorado) are beyond my favourites in the animated movies I've come across. The expressions are something every artist should strive for, able to effortlessly add humour or sorrow to any situation, it really inspired me as an artist as well, and I'm sure it does with many others. And they're also something that this movie has offered that Disney or Pixar never really could to such an extent. 2D animations are easier for artists to relate to than 3D and it makes them think, "Oh my God, I can do that." It's a wonderful thing to take into account, you could potentially be helping artists and animators of the future. Wouldn't you love to see more beautiful animations out there?
The fluidity of the character's movements was something that can't be passed up, ever. Not to mention even the 3D effects were very ahead of its time. The music altogether was astounding. (Is it even possible for Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer to write a bad song?) It was so much better than is always expected from children's films. I admit, I did have It's Tough to be a God stuck in my head on repeat for quite the while.
Above everything else, the humour made this film one of the funniest I'd seen. Too often companies fall into the trap of making dumb humour, because, it's just a kid's show right? Wrong, it's safe to say everyone found the dry, sarcastic, clever, and just plain hilarious mixtures of humour in The Road to El Dorado funny, even the little ones. If there were to be sequels this needs to be taken into account, you can't take a wonderful thing and ruin it with bad or crude jokes that make people groan to themselves in embarrassment or say "God, I've seen this kind of thing so many times. Why do they have to be so stupid?" This animation is a refreshing well-deserved break from all that.
Hopefully, if DreamWorks is to jump on this we'll be able to see even more 2D films of theirs. Miguel and Tulio have so much potential as characters! It's sad to know that such an amazing partnership will be wasted, sign this petition (it won't take long at all!!) so they'll be kept alive! Thirteen years is a long time to be asleep, but if we can resurrect the franchise, it's sure to be worth it. If you do sign it, promise to see it if this succeeds, no excuses like the stars aren't in posistion or something, do it!
