Canadian fisherman are still killing these poor, innocent seals. One of the reasons for the slaughter of these animals is because people kill for their skins and to obtain oil. Also, the seals eat the Atlantic cod, which makes the fisherman of the North Atlantic cod fishery go in competition.
Canadians intend to kill over 325,000 seals this spring with additional 10,000 harp seals for an aboriginal allowance. The government of Canada is willing to sacrifice everything to continue seal hunting.
Seals are badly tortured and killed getting clubbed by a hakapik (which is a long stick with a hooked blade at the at one end). If the seal is still alive, they club it once or twice more until it dies then they'll skin it. But about 40% of the seals are skinned alive.
