Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Maharashtra, western India, is home to all sorts of threatened animals and plants, including tigers, the Indian rock python, and the Indian pangolin.
All this wildlife is threatened, though, by stone quarrying taking place less than a mile from the reserve. Mining in eco-sensitive zones is illegal, but there are at least four active quarries in the area.
India has been making headway with protecting the tiger and other wildlife, but allowing destructive activities to continue puts these efforts in jeopardy.
Tell the state government to crack down on illegal quarrying around Tipeshwar.
We the undersigned ask that you take action on the stone quarrying taking place in the vicinity of Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. Although apparently illegal under current legislation, the quarrying continues, and it is putting the wildlife, including five tigers, of the sanctuary in even more danger.
Threats already exist from overgrazing and development. The last thing the wildlife of the area needs is to contend with mining activities. While efforts to save the tiger and protect other wildlife seem to be having an effect, they’ll be negated by allowing such destructive activities to continue or increase.
Please take action on this issue as a matter of urgency.
