Nuclear Power Kills Animals Too

The on-going Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan brought us heartbreaking pictures of skeletal dogs and ragged cats roaming the streets and of dying livestock left to starve.

Marine animals are also suffering, contaminated by tens of thousands of tons of radioactively contaminated water dumped into the ocean at Fukushima.

But nuclear power harms animals without an accident. During daily operation, millions of fish and spawn are pulverized by reactor intake systems while endangered sea turtles, manatees and seals are injured and killed.

Help us send a message to President Obama today. Ask him to take a strong stand for safe, sustainable, clean energy, not dangerous nuclear power.

If a nuclear accident happened in the US, we can't take our pets to evacuation centers or most hotels.  During the recent tornadoes and floods, thousands of animals were left unclaimed, ended up in shelters or were euthanized. And that was without a radioactive exclusion zone.

That's why we are asking you to sign our petition to President Obama today. We must protect animals along with people by switching to clean, affordable renewable energy and energy efficiency.
I want to protect animals from suffering like those at Fukushima by supporting a phase-out of nuclear power.
Dear President Obama:
As a dog lover I am sure you would not want to leave Bo, the First Dog, to starve or run wild in the event of a nuclear power plant accident. But that%u2019s just what thousands of Japanese citizens had to do when the Fukushima reactors melted down. Their heartbreak, and the suffering of their animals, has been shown on CNN and on networks around the world.  We even saw footage of desperate, dying cows left behind when farmers evacuated.
Marine animals are also being harmed by the Fukushima meltdowns, poisoned by billions of gallons of radioactive waste discharged into the ocean to %u201Cflush%u201D the nuclear plant.
US farmers cannot afford to watch the slaughter of their livestock because of a nuclear accident. American pet owners have already lost hundreds of animals to tornadoes and floods this summer.  But at least rescuers were not kept away by high levels of radioactivity.
The sad images of Fukushima%u2019s animals outraged many. But anger won%u2019t stop the tragic outcome of a nuclear disaster. Strong, decisive action will.
Please honor your commitment to safe, sustainable, renewable energy by taking a stand against continued use of nuclear power. It%u2019s in the best interests of all living things.
