I am extremely concerned and disturbed by the current state of operations at Krabloonik. The Department of Agriculture has repeatedly cited Krabloonik on several violations of state regulations. Most recently, Krabloonik failed a State inspection in May of 2008 in which 10 violations were identified.
Irrespective of State law, the Community Values and Vision Values of Snowmass Village entail a higher standard of care and a strong connection to the natural environment. As an international destination and recognized brand, Aspen/Snowmass must uphold these qualities in the products and services offered to its visitors. We expect Krabloonik to set the standard for sled dog operators in their care and daily living conditions of the working sled dogs.
The current conditions of the sled dogs reflect anything but this. The dogs struggle to find shade and often lack fresh water. Anchored to a shorter than six feet chain, they spend 8 months of their year pacing repetitively over and over, back and forth, day after day, month after month. They receive no exercise over the summer and then are expected to start pulling heavy sleds of tourists once the snow falls. Chained at an early age, puppies bred at Krabloonik live a demoralizing life.
How can Snowmass Village claim to be a community that is concerned with quality service and a connection to the natural environment when so many citizens and tourists are witness to suffering dogs at Krabloonik, and in response, write to the newspapers in disgust? How can Krabloonik be labeled as a community asset when they refuse to hold themselves accountable to providing acceptable living conditions for the working sled dog?
I will no longer be a witness to animal cruelty and not take action. I ask that the Snowmass Village Council accept responsibility for their tenant as measured by:
1) Requiring Krabloonik to conform to State Law no later than October 1, 2008, by correcting the violations cited in May 2008.
2) Establish a Krabloonik Oversight Committee comprised of members of
the community to reset the standards of care for the working sled dogs that more closely aligns with the Community values of Snowmass Village.
Should these requested actions fail to be enacted by Snowmass Village Council and the standards of care upheld by Krabloonik's owner, we request the termination of Krabloonik's lease and license.
