Pulaski County Shelter is totally overwhelmed and will be putting animals to sleep tmrw (Thurs) and Friday. They took in 39 puppies in a matter of two days, and they need help from rescues.

In the last week of October, our team conducted a ground-breaking training session in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti at the Haiti Animal Care Center. HSI spent the past several months identifying the different strengths and interests of local veterinarians, selecting representatives from each of the 10 departments (regions) of the country. Introductory training

In partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, HSI launched this training for some of the most surgically proficient doctors from across Haiti as part of our continued work with the Ministry of Agriculture. HSI and Best Friends intend to conduct a series of surgical spay and neuter clinics across the country in conjunction with the ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Agriculture's Animal Health Department to help fight the incidence of rabies on the island. HSI also developed a manual of best practice techniques and considerations for field spay/neuter clinics that factors in the resources, availability of medications and finances of the veterinary community in Haiti. This document has been translated into Creole so that it can be used by Haitian veterinarians to educate veterinary agents and technicians back home in their communities.

Our team spent five days covering clinical surgical topics ranging from maintaining sterility to applying sutures, including three days of hands-on medical examinations, treatments and, last but not least, surgeries. Throughout, there was a focus on demonstrating the essential components of a safe and efficient field surgical clinic. Although five days is an admittedly short period of time in which to cover such a broad array of topics, this training served as an introduction to a much larger, long-term project that HSI will be developing in Haiti. We plan to continue our education of vets and implementation of locally-operated surgical clinics to humanely address the country-wide concerns associated with unchecked street dog populations.

Amazing progress

The 16 Haitian veterinary doctors who attended were divided into four groups during the training. Watching the transition of these vets from unsure but eager participants into cohesive teams of compassionate surgeons was tremendous. Every day, the unique skills of each vet became more apparent. Some were better surgeons, some, handlers and others, teachers. Each team very quickly learned to identify these strengths among its members and embraced them. Vets who had never been asked to take the lead during a surgery learned to train the others on their team as they operated. Those who may not have thought of anesthesia as more than an injection learned to diligently monitor the reactions of their patients and determine what steps to take to ensure their comfort. Perhaps the least clinical but most moving advancement we witnessed was to see veterinarians who had never thought to hold a dog any longer than necessary, lie on the ground after surgeries, gently caressing their patients' heads as the animals awoke from anesthesia.

After seeing the astounding level of interest, dedication and compassion of the Haitian veterinary doctors during this last clinic, we are confident that cooperation and in turn, positive change is possible and with time, will be achieved.

way to go Cesar ! a very , sad, yet heartwarming story . it is good to hear this has been set up , it is sad and makes no sense to euthanize these dogs when there are homes for them in other states. ultimately -there has got to be some kind of nationwide low cost spay/neuter organization established to somehow try and get a handle on the over population in this country . thanks for the update , Sandy !

A “Home” for the Holidays

Fifty Dogs Saved from Death Row to Safety

(San Bernardino, Calif.) – On Thursday, December 16, Cesar and team joined animal rights advocate Kim Sill and Sharon Blechinger of the H.E.A.L. Foundation at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter to save 50 dogs from euthanasia and bring them to safety. The shelter is known as one of the city’s highest kill shelters. With the generous support of the Heigl Foundation, as part of their Compassion Revolution, the lucky Chihuahuas, Terriers, Pomeranians, and other small breed dogs, were loaded onto a van and driven to Friends of Animals in Park City, Utah. The trip marked the inaugural trip for the newly-crate-outfitted “Rescue Rig.”

The dogs arrived in Utah Thursday night (some already with forever homes and others with fosters and no-kill rescue organizations), just in time for Christmas! Some will go on to states like Washington that have a need and want for small breed dogs. In addition to assisting with the safe loading of dogs into the van, Cesar and his team donated dozens of towels and blankets collected by his office staff to bring cushion and warmth to the dogs being transported.

In California, over $250 million is spent each year housing and euthanizing homeless dogs and cats. Approximately one million dogs and cats enter California’s shelters each year, and over half of them are euthanized simply because there are not enough homes. Other states not only have room for animals in their shelters, but a waiting list for animals to adopt, making the transport missions a key component of the Compassion Revolution.

During the transport, one of Cesar’s team, Lindsay Taub, who was there volunteering on behalf of the Millan Foundation, fell in love-at-first-sight with one of the Chihuahua mixes being loaded onto the Rescue Rig. “Something about her just spoke to me and said, ‘you have to take her home’,” said Lindsay, who is fostering the puppy. “I’m not ready to bring a third dog into my pack, but I want to find this precious little thing a great home.”

And the magic of the season came to life – because little “Holly” went home with Lindsay, there was room for another dog to be saved from doggie death row that day. But the miracle doesn’t end there. As soon as Holly got “home,” she started exhibiting symptoms of kennel cough, which affects almost every dog leaving a shelter. After a check with the vet, Lindsay learned that Holly’s kennel cough had developed into full-blown pneumonia. (This condition would have prevented Holly from making the trip to Utah, being a threat to the health of the other dogs, and she would have been returned to the shelter to be euthanized.) Not wanting to risk further exposure to her two dogs at home and wanting Holly to receive the best possible medical care, Lindsay decided to hospitalize her.

Holly is making progress every day, although it has been slower than hoped. With luck and so many people pulling for her, we hope Holly will make a full recovery to good health and maybe even be in her new home before the New Year!

“It’s a Christmas miracle that Holly was brought into my life so I could save hers, at least to give her a chance,” Lindsay said. “But my heart is still broken thinking about all the others just like her who were left behind. It’s just a devastating situation.”

Cesar echoed the sentiment. “The overpopulation in our shelters is unacceptable. We need to continue to raise awareness, educate people, encourage adoption, and provide low-cost spay and neuter to address the issue from every possible angle,” he said. “I’m not here today as the Dog Whisperer. I’m just a volunteer, a Mexican guy who loves dogs and wants to save them all!”

September 17 - Bexar County Jail after he was charged with the mutilation and killing of three cats. Austin Patterson was arrested Sunday in Live Oak and was charged with three counts of torture and killing an animal.

Universal City police said that the cats were found laying on plywood with their heads crushed and their feet bound with duct tape. "Very gruesome, a lot of blood," said Lt. Bil More..l Gabbard of the Universal City Police Department. "You just can't fathom, can't understand why someone would take out hate and aggression on an animal."

All three cats had been dismembered and one was disemboweled, Gabbard said. Several cutting instruments were found on the ground, including a hammer and nails, Gabbard said. Police are looking into the possibility that the cats were used for satanic rituals, Gabbard said. Patterson was jailed in lieu of $61,000 bond.

 This petition was written by Jaleh-F animal protector on Care2.          There are a lot of feral cats and dogs living in Iran.  As everybody knows the Persian Cats are the most famous in the world but unfortunately the cats in this country are being treated very  badly by Persian People.  I guess the Iranian Nation are the most cruel people with the animals in all Middle East.

There are more than 500,000 cats living in the streets who are mostly very hungry and their life spam is max. 4  years.   Only 5% of Iranians are caring for these animals and try to help them, who are always facing with other peoples who are against any help to the animals.  The people are taking away the kittens from the mother cat and put them in  city garbage tanks or taking them away very far and abandoning  them to live in the deserted areas  of the cities to die slowly and painfully from starvation. 

The members of SPCA Iran are taking the feral cats and dogs and deliver them to various Laboratories for vivisection. Some have their heads split open, for brain research. 

The feral dogs are being killed  by municipality on routine basis.   According to our religion we should be kind to the animals but unfortunately Iranian People are very cruel in this way.
