Gov. Perdue: Veto Bills that Harm North Carolina's Environment
During the rush and late night votes of the final days of the North Carolina state legislature's 2012 session in July, two bad bills quietly passed both the state House and state Senate. Senate Bill 229 (S229) is a bill full of loopholes and benefits to polluters while House Bill 819 (H819) is an outrageous effort to stop the state from planning for sea level rise related to climate change.
S229 weakens NC's strong water basin quality program, has exemptions for compost facilities from stormwater rules and ambiguous language limiting local government authority over riparian buffers. Tell Governor Perdue to veto these terrible bills and put North Carolina back on the right track!
Dear Governor Perdue,
Please veto two bad bills now on your desk, House Bill 819 and Senate Bill 229.
H819 represents a direct attack on sound science, pushed forward by radical legislators and special interest groups who want to ignore widely accepted scientific predictions for sea level rise. S229 amounts to a polluter's wish list and is full of special provisions that will put a clean and healthy North Carolina at risk.
