Protect dogs from cruel puppy mills!
Tens of thousands of puppies and mother breeding dogs are suffering needlessly in United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulated puppy mills.
Puppy mills are inhumane large commercial breeding facilities where puppies are "mass-produced" for sale to pet stores, middleman brokers or over the internet. These poor animals are forced to live in squalid conditions with minimal veterinary care or human interaction. As a result, many of the puppies who are sold to the public are sick, while the breeding dogs often suffer from severe physical behavioral, and emotional problems.
The federal government has neglected to step up its game when it comes to regulating how these facilities treat dogs, and something needs to be done to improve the living conditions of these animals. The Puppy Protection Act (H.R. 2840/S. 1385) will drastically improve the quality of life of dogs in USDA-licensed breeding facilities by requiring stronger standards of care including increased enclosure sizes, solid flooring, exercise, feeding twice per day, socialization, increased veterinary care, and protection from extreme temperatures. It will also impose breeding limits and ensure that breeders make reasonable efforts to rehome retired dogs instead of discarding or killing them.

As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to cosponsor the Puppy Protection Act (H.R. 2840/S. 1385), which will crack down on puppy mills.
This critical piece of legislation will strengthen the standards of care for tens of thousands of dogs in commercial breeding facilities.
The Puppy Protection Act will amend the Animal Welfare Act by updating the outdated and inadequate standards of care used to regulate large commercial dog breeders. These standards are decades old and although they may keep dogs alive, they are certainly not humane.
This legislation will go a long way to crack down on the very real problem of puppy mills. Our pets are our family and should be treated as such. As your constituent, I am asking you to take action against puppy mills.
