Every year in Canada, hundereds of thousands of defenceless baby seals are clubbed, shot and bludgeoned to death by sealers (commercial fishermen) to make fur coats, ear muffs, fancy boots etc. from the seals fur. The seal hunting season starts in March and goes through until April. This year, Canada's seal kill quota is 400,000 baby seals. Yes, that is 400,000 baby seals. The methods of seal hunting are incredibly cruel and very painful too. The sealers use a long wooden pole, with a sharp hook on the end to club, kill and drag the seals to their death. This pole is called a hakapik. Another method of slaughter is being shot several times to slowly die a needless death.
Here are some frighetining facts about the seal hunt: More than 2 million baby seals have been killed in the last 10 years (98% of the seals were under the age of 3 months old), 67% of seals were not tested for unconciousness, 82% of seals did not die with the first shot of a gun and 100% of seals die needlessly. On average, less than 5% of a sealers income comes from the seal hunt. Countless baby seals have already died, due to the rapid amount of melting sea ice, yet the Canadian Government still allows sealers to slaughter whatever surviving pups they can find.
However, lots of worldwide countries have already banned the trade and importation of seal products from Canada, such as countries like Russia and Belarus and many many more.
Canada's commercial seal hunt has already started, so lets quickly send a MASSIVE outcry to Canada, to help end their grueling seal slaughter before they reach their quota of 400,000 defenceless baby seal pups. Every signature COUNTS.
We the undersigned are here today, to help persaude the honourable canadian Government to end Canada's commercial seal hunt for good.
We all feel very strongly, that the seal hunt is extremely cruel, unnecessary and barbaric. Other countries around the world have already banned seal products, countries like Russia and Belarus and so many more. We would like to see Canada follow the same path as these other countries are and ban seal hunting in Canada.
Here are some frightening facts about Canada's commercial seal hunt: More than 2 million seals have died from seal hunting in the last 10 years, 67% of selas were not tested for unconciousness, 82% of seals did not not die with the first shot of a gun and 100% of seals die needlessly. On average, less then 5% of a sealers income comes from seal hunting. Not much!
We thank you for taking the time to read this letter and we hope that you will listen to the majority of people from around the world that do NOT want seal hunting to continue.
