Ask Bruce Springsteen to book Great North

Great North frontman Hayden Donnell is a Springsteen fan. He yells the words to Thunder Road at traffic lights as fellow commuters stare, weeps on the couch to The Rising, feels unironic joy at the sound of a sax solo. Once, in a fit of madness, he bought plane tickets to see a Springsteen show in Hamilton, Canada. Please get behind Great North's bid for the second support slot for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at their Auckland show on March 1, 2014.

Note: We don't want to replace Jimmy Barnes, just play before him. Or work out some harmonies to Working Class Man and play with him. Anything.

My earliest memory of Hayden is him kicking me in the balls. We were 7 years old. Since then I've only seen him happy twice. Once was his wedding day, which was overshadowed by the time he traversed the Pacific Ocean to see The Boss play in Canada.

It was the night of the bonfire party. As was tradition, Hayden had flown an ocean to be here in Melbourne for the Bruce Springsteen concert. He wore his beloved Springsteen shirt, the one with the bottom on it. We lay about in fold-away camping chairs as the night wore on, as the liquor took effect, and as the flames retreated into hot, white logs. Tomorrow night, Hayden would see Springsteen for the fifth time or maybe the sixth. An early night was in order. Climbing into the cab, we became suddenly aware of a potent odour. The bonfire smoke. It had permeated every thread of our jeans and our jackets. It was following us. Panic spread across Hayden's face. The Springsteen shirt! All morning, the shirt flew like a flag from the apartment window. Later, on the dubious advice of the internet, it was sealed in a ziplock bag and placed in the freezer. The concert drew nearer. Anxiously, Hayden slid the shirt from its frozen seal. His mouth dropped. The defiant stench had only intensified in the sub-zero climate. From across the kitchen, I could hear his heart pounding: Boss. Boss. Boss. His eyes hovered over the suitcase in the corner of the room. Inside, a selection of freshly laundered shirts, yet none of them featuring the bottom of The Boss. He pulled the Springsteen shirt over his head, and stuffed the concert ticket into his jeans pocket. Tonight, he would wear his new fragrance with pride.

When you live with Hayden you learn what it means to leave the house. Watch the carpet as much as you can, try to see every flea for what it is. Try to spend some time looking for the exit point, the bright sun on the porch. Spend a while tying your laces. Visualise the transit. Try to get to the door. In a fleck of periphery you may see a crying Hayden, white knuckles, clinging to a cracked and weary CD casing. You may hear yelling, an agonising volume, sobbing spiritual revival, fervent prayer for The Rising, impassioned notes, wetted fingers smudging on said casing, glory falling. When you live with Hayden even the fleas know The Boss by heart.
