There is a rich history behind the Husky logo and what it represents.
In 1934, the student newspaper conducted a poll for the study body to vote on a mascot for the newly named Connecticut State College. The mascot of a husky was the obvious favorite. Then it was decided that his name should be Jonathan after Jonathan Trumbull, Connecticut's Revolutionary-War era governor.
From then on the University of Connecticut has been known for it's Husky mascot. Not just for having one of the few living mascots in the nation but also for the positive sportsmanship message it represented. UConn has always been a university bursting with pride for our academics and athletics. We embody the phrase, "Students Today, Huskies Forever."
Some information about the new logo:
1. It wasn't generated through student involvement which is how we became the Huskies in the first place through a student poll.
2. It was kept and still continues to be very secretive and unknown to the UConn community.
3.The changes are to make the logo more aggressive and intimidating.
4. There hasn't been a positive reason given as to why the changes were necessary.
I urge you to sign this petition to create attention to this change. The fact is that maybe it's time to change the logo. However, not involving the students and UConn community in the process isn't the way to do it. Also, creating a meaner and intimidating logo isn't beneficial to the University and all the positive things it does as a whole.
