Tell Congress to oppose radical hunting proposals in HR 4089

A bill before the House of Representatives would drasically alter the way polar bears and other wildlife species are protected in the United States.
H.R. 4089 (The "Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012") combines several anti-wildlife proposals into a single dangerous bill.
It amends the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) to allow for the importation of polar bear "trophies" from Canada that are presented as having been taken prior to the May 2008 Endangered Species Act listing.
It requires federal agencies to open nearly all public lands to hunting--including national parks--and prevents federal agencies from reviewing the impacts of hunting on non-tartget species or their habitats under the National Environmental Policy Act.
It removes the ability of the EPA to protect wildlife and people from lead poisoning through toxic ammunition exposure.

Please call your U.S. Representative now at (202) 225-3121, and follow up with an email.

I urge that you oppose H.R. 4089, the so-called “Sportsmen’s Heritage Act of 2012".  Polar bears are in dire jeopardy due to habitat loss and would only be further imperiled by allowing wealthy trophy hunters to import their kills into the United States.
H.R. 4089 would also open sensitive wilderness areas to hunting--including national parks--by requiring federal agencies to open all federal lands to recreational hunting.
H.R. 4089 would eliminate the ability of the EPA to protect wildlife and human communities from lead poisoning via the Toxic Substances Control Act. Lead ammunition needlessly pollutes our waterways and soil and poisons millions of animals every year while alternative ammunition is readily and economically available. The USFWS has for more than two decades banned the use of lead ammunition for waterfowl hunting and NPS prohibits its staff and contractors from using lead ammunition. Congress should not be in the business of preventing the EPA from enacting sound, science based policy.
