Within days of taking office, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders with devastating impacts. He vowed to move forward with the construction of both the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline. This follows the recent announcement that 2016 was the hottest year on record.
Canadian Cabinet members welcomed the news of Trump's decision, hailing the revival of the pipeline project. Prime Minister Trudeau has voiced support for numerous pipeline projects in the past several months. And now, he has pat Trump on the back and agreed to work with him on TransCanada's Keystone XL.
Amidst such blatant climate denial from the Trump Administration, PM Trudeau must take a firm environmental stance.
Climate models are clear about the consequences of these actions: we have no wiggle room left to protect a relatively-stable climate. CO2 emissions have warmed the planet at an unprecedented rate. Scientists say that because of this, we are in the middle of the sixth great extinction - the first ever caused by humans. As a result of rising seas, increased natural disasters, and natural resource scarcity, many organizations foresee 100 million refugees by the middle of the century.
Supporters of the pipeline claim it will boost the economy. Yet studies show that renewables will contribute more permanent jobs to the Canadian economy, and will create jobs that are safer. Despite a complex problem, there are actually a few simple, common sense solutions to these troubles: shift from fossil fuels to renewables. Reduce consumption. Stop building pipelines.
As a member of the global community - and indeed, both the contributions and effects of climate change are global - it is our responsibility to act. Sign now to tell Trudeau: saving the climate means no more pipelines built. Take a stronger stance on the environment and denounce Trump's Keystone XL position!
