I am no stranger to hunting but there comes a time when it's logic must be questioned. I understand nature and would like to provide a solution. A few years ago I obtained 70000 signatures that was rejected by parliament but now I will have another Crack.
Like the war on drugs, it won't end with a life sentence. When a creature feels under threat they go into a natural state of survival and part of that survival is panic breeding. Animals are one dimensional in their thought process, when they feel attacked they assume their species is under attack, not just themselves. They understand even more than we do that it's survival of the fittest.
We have to accept possums belong in New Zealand now. We can claim to be 3rd 4th and 5th generation new zealanders but for that possum your about to shoot out of a tree is likely to be 3000th generation new zealand possum who may have had possibly 50 generations living in that one tree alone.
The Solution
The natural resources of food are not available to possums as they are for possums in Australia. Instead of aerial 1080 poison drops and chemical castration we must do aerial drops of seeds to feed the population of possums so they have an abundance to leave the birds alone. The seeds that need to be scattered are things like grapes & wild berries that will grow rapidly. This will replenish the supply and demand of the new zealand forest. I have no doubt the breeding will eventually reduce after a few generations of possum and native birds will begin to be left alone as a new abundance is discovered. Anyone who has been to Australia and interacted with the possums know they prefer to eat fruit of anything and they don't run away from you like the possums in New Zealand do and it's almost as if new zealand possums have an intergenerational instinct against the intentions of humans.
