Oklahoma Governor Stitt (R), along with several GOP leaders, is trying to strip federally recognized tribes of their environmental authority in a desperate attempt to prop up the failing fossil fuel industry.
A leaked memo to Congress, the so-called "ONE OKLAHOMA" plan would be a disaster for tribes in the state, and would help pave the way for further attacks on tribal sovereignty nationwide.
In recent years, Oklahoma has become a fossil-fuel dependent state. Pipelines, injection wells and widespread fracking has resulted in massive man-made earthquakes and deadly health impacts. Many of these activities are located on or near tribal lands, creating Indigenous sacrifice zones in what can only be described as state-sponsored environmental genocide.
There are 39 federally recognized tribes within the state of Oklahoma. Collectively these tribes pour billions of dollars of revenue into the state coffers each year. Like all tribes in the US, they possess the sovereignty to govern themselves, as recognized under the US Constitution. Governor Stitt, whose pockets are heavily lined by oil and gas money, believes he has found a loophole to crush an Indigenous-led green movement.
We cannot allow Stitt's plan to succeed. We are asking Congress to:
- Refuse to sign any agreement or Act that would strip Oklahoma tribes of their environmental authority
- Affirm Tribal and Indigenous Sovereignty among the 39 recognized tribes of Oklahoma
