Since the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, commonly known as the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, began in 2009, thousands of dogs have been slaughtered for their meat during the 10-day festival each year.
But the fact that these dogs are killed for consumption isn't even the worst part. Controversy surrounds every facet of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.
Many of the dogs that are killed are household pets abducted by vendors who want extra meat. Countless images show dogs still wearing collars being sent to slaughter. Many vendors believe that adrenalin makes the meat taste better, so the dogs are often instigated to the point of torture before they are killed. The dogs are then skinned alive and boiled alive. It's a horrifying and tragic experience.
The Chinese government is starting to feel the pressure to stop the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, and fewer dogs have been killed in recent years due to restrictions on how much dog meat a vendor can sell. In fact, in 2020 the Chinese city of Shenzhen banned eating dogs and cats completely. This is very encouraging.
But it's not enough. We must stop Yulin now.
